Access is a county-wide transportation system that offers curb to curb service to all. Riders must call 24 hours ahead to specifically schedule his/her ride. Van scheduling is five days per week and costs $5.00 one way per rider in County and $7.50 one way out of County. Young children must be accompanied by a designated adult. Persons over age 60 travel free. -

The Brown County Public Library provides many free services to children and families. The children’s area of the library is full of books, toys, games, puzzles, tablets, computers, and more for kids to play with anytime. Many reading programs that include young children can be found on the Library’s website. Babies, the library’s youngest patrons, can receive a “Welcome Baby Bag” that includes a book, cd, finger puppet, and other materials to promote early literacy. Pre-Kindergarten children can join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative, designed to promote reading aloud, early literacy, and fostering a love of lifelong reading and learning.

The InfantSEE Program recommends that everyone get their baby’s eyes checked for the first time at 6 months old. The exam is free of charge, no matter the insurance situation. Parents simply need to mention the exam is for InfantSEE when they schedule an appointment. There is no paperwork needed for parents. You can find more information at www.infantsee.org.
Dr. Gootee’s office can perform eye exams for kids of any age. They have the equipment and training to check the eyes no matter the child’s situation. -

The Brown County Guardian Ad Litem Program is a program of the Brown County Circuit Court, which uses trained volunteers to serve as court appointed special advocates who are committed to representing the best interests of children who are at risk of abuse or neglect.
GAL volunteers make recommendations regarding appropriate protective and rehabilitative services to ensure a safe and permanent home for every child adjudicated to be a Child In Need of Services, and/or children involved in other litigation who need an advocate.

The Brown County Literacy Coalition collaborates with community partners to tutor children, distribute books, and provide a bridge to reading fluency and comprehension. The tutoring program supports children in grades 1-12 via partnerships with the Brown county Schools, local tutors, Indiana University, and the Indiana Kids program.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library sends a free book each month to the home of participating children, aged birth to five. Signup sheets are available at many locations in Brown County and at the Literacy Coalition office. Other available free materials include a children’s music CD and a video for parents regarding the importance of reading to children. -

Brown County Schools offers a fully inclusive Preschool Program for children 3 to 5 years of age. A child is eligible enrollment on his/her third birthday. Positive classroom practices are the foundation for building a joyful community of learners.
The program is child-centered while providing the structure needed for children to feel safe within predictable routines. We respect that each child is uniquely individual and eagerly watch for and celebrate learning milestones as a natural outcome of play and guided learning activities.
Preschool classrooms are available at all three elementary schools. All programs have before and after school care. Before school care runs from 6:45 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. After school care runs from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Brown County Weekend Backpacks is a year round, community-led program whose goal is keeping hungry children fed with nutritious food all weekend long. Get your workout in the Y. The facility offers traditional cardio and weight machines to free weights, an indoor track, and an indoor pool. The Center also offers fitness classes, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and aquatics. Besides regular membership the Y sponsors Community Day, the first Saturday of each month, where Brown County residents can use the facility for free.

Foster grandparents serve in Brown County Schools preschool and kindergarten classrooms and the Brown County Head Start Program assisting referred children who are at risk academically, socially, emotionally or behaviorally. Head Start is a holistic preschool program at no cost. Head Start Performance Standards are followed as well as Indiana licensing regulations to create and maintain a high-quality educational experience for children. Eligible first enrollees must be age three prior to August 1.
