Access is a county-wide transportation system that offers curb to curb service to all.  Riders must call 24 hours ahead to specifically schedule his/her ride.   Van scheduling is five days per week and costs $5.00 one way per rider in County and $7.50 one way out of County.  Young children must be accompanied by a designated adult.   Persons over age 60 travel free.

The Brown County Public Library provides many free services to children and families. The children’s area of the library is full of books, toys, games, puzzles, tablets, computers, and more for kids to play with anytime.  Many reading programs that include young children can be found on the Library’s website.

Babies, the library’s youngest patrons, can receive a “Welcome Baby Bag” that includes a book, cd, finger puppet, and other materials to promote early literacy.

Pre-Kindergarten children can join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative, designed to promote reading aloud, early literacy, and fostering a love of lifelong reading and learning.

The InfantSEE Program recommends that everyone get their baby’s eyes checked for the first time at 6 months old.  The exam is free of charge, no matter the insurance situation.  Parents simply need to mention the exam is for InfantSEE when they schedule an appointment.  There is no paperwork needed for parents.  You can find more information at

Dr. Gootee’s office can perform eye exams for kids of any age.  They have the equipment and training to check the eyes no matter the child’s situation.

The Brown County Guardian Ad Litem Program is a program of the Brown County Circuit Court, which uses trained volunteers to serve as court appointed special advocates who are committed to representing the best interests of children who are at risk of abuse or neglect.

GAL volunteers make recommendations regarding appropriate protective and rehabilitative services to ensure a safe and permanent home for every child adjudicated to be a Child In Need of Services, and/or children involved in other litigation who need an advocate.

By appointment public health nurses offer immunizations, flue shots, health tests and screenings, blood pressure checks lice checks and medication pregnancy tests, TB tests and screens for cholesterol, diabetes and anemia.  Some charges may apply; insurance is accepted but not required.

The Brown County Literacy Coalition collaborates with community partners to tutor children, distribute books, and provide a bridge to reading fluency and comprehension.  The tutoring program supports children in grades 1-12 via partnerships with the Brown county Schools, local tutors, Indiana University, and the Indiana Kids program.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library sends a free book each month to the home of participating children, aged birth to five.  Signup sheets are available at many locations in Brown County and at the Literacy Coalition office.  Other available free materials include a children’s music CD and a video for parents regarding the importance of reading to children.

Brown County Schools offers a fully inclusive Preschool Program for children 3 to 5 years of age.  A child is eligible enrollment on his/her third birthday.  Positive classroom practices are the foundation for building a joyful community of learners.

The program is child-centered while providing the structure needed for children to feel safe within predictable routines. We respect that each child is uniquely individual and eagerly watch for and celebrate learning milestones as a natural outcome of play and guided learning activities.

Preschool classrooms are available at all three elementary schools.  All programs have before and after school care.  Before school care runs from 6:45 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. After school care runs from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Brown County Weekend Backpacks is a year round, community-led program whose goal is keeping hungry children fed with nutritious food all weekend long.  Service is provided to all students enrolled in Head Start and to all Brown County Schools students in kindergarten who are eligible for the free lunch program.  The Backpacks Program is also available to all free lunch eligible students.

WIC is designed to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five. The program provides a combination of nutrition education, supplemental foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals for health care.

Get your workout in the Y.  The facility offers traditional cardio and weight machines to free weights, an indoor track, and an indoor pool.  The Center also offers fitness classes, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and aquatics.  Besides regular membership the Y sponsors Community Day, the first Saturday of each month, where Brown County residents can use the facility for free.

Centerstone is a not-for-profit health care organization dedicated to delivering care that changes people’s lives. Family centered programming is available to promote mental health and wellness for children, teens and adults. Clarity Pregnancy Services of Brown County offers free pregnancy test and education on all pregnancy options and community referrals.  Material assistance for mother and babies ages birth to five i.e. diapers, formula, clothing, bottles, Pack & Play, and car seats.  We provide compassionate non-judgmental client support and referrals for free ultrasounds and STI attesting at another Clarity location.

Community Partners for Child Safety is a voluntary, free service to help parents and children. Services available include parenting, home based therapy, home based casework, and community resourcing.  Services can last up to three months.

Indiana’s First Steps system is a family-centered, locally-based, coordinated system that provides early intervention services to infants and young children through age three who may have developmental delays or who have a diagnosed mental or physical condition that has a high probability of resulting in developmental delays.  Service is generally provided in the home.

Foster grandparents serve in Brown County Schools preschool and kindergarten classrooms and the Brown County Head Start Program assisting referred children who are at risk academically, socially, emotionally or behaviorally.  The students receive academic tutoring, friendship, mentoring and guidance that positively contribute to the children’s development in school and for life.  Classroom teachers supervise the work of foster grandparents.

Head Start is a holistic preschool program at no cost.  Head Start Performance Standards are followed as well as Indiana licensing regulations to create and maintain a high-quality educational experience for children.  The inclusive approach leads children to self-regulation through educational, health and well-being, social-emotional, physical activity and healthy food choice curriculums.  Eligible first enrollees must be age three prior to August 1.

Services are offered to families who have incomes below the federal poverty guidelines.

Provides urgent care for children who are ill as well as routine well-child visits, preschool/kindergarten and sports physicals.  Well-child visits allow an opportunity to assess each child’s physical, behavioral, developmental and emotional well-being.  When potential issues are identified, children benefit from early intervention and treatment. IU Health Salt Creek accepts most insurances including Medicaid and Healthy Indiana Plan.

Lori’s Ton “O” Fun Daycare, established in 2004, has three licensed daycares, each with a maximum capacity of 16 children.  Safe, secure and a healthy environment are provided to children from infancy to 12 years of age.  Services seek to improve and enhance the child's mental, physical, emotional, intellectual and social behaviors.  The daycare participates in CCDF and CACFP.

Wellness for Life is a primary care and wellness service for children and families.  Services include acute care, family medicine, help managing chronic conditions, medication dispensing and prescription, evaluation and treatment of minor and non-emergent issues and laboratory work.  Children under 18 years of age are charged a monthly membership fee of $35.00.  This fee is smaller if child is joining as part of a family with two adults.

Silver Linings is an emergency/long term women’s shelter, and outgrowth of the larger mission of Women’s Resource Center.  It is both a crisis shelter for short-term needs of women in crisis due to homelessness, domestic violence and other circumstances in which women and their children are unable to find safe housing.
